Observing the lack of English speech and writing
competencies among our youth leadership high school participants, GASA sensed a
need to check on the teachers themselves. Our GASA Field Coordinator, Ms. Verna
M. Alih proposed to hold a workshop for our secondary English teachers.
It was well received by the GASA BOD and members and also by Ms. Pura Jumadla,
DepEd Supervisor for English in Siquijor. With the blessing from Dr. Fernando T.
Po, DepEd Division Superintendent, the full-day workshop was scheduled for Jan
27th and Ms. Carmenia Y. Miraflor coined the acronym STEW for Siquijor Teachers
English Workshop. Mr. Mariano Ngan, retired high school English teacher from
Silliman University was chosen as the resource speaker. Thus, STEW was
successfully piloted at Lazi National Agriculture School on January 27th, 2007. Thanks to all the GASA
members and friends who made this pilot (and the next STEW) possible.

The teachers were so enthused by this workshop that Ms.
Jumadla was already thinking of doing another one for the elementary English
teachers. For a photo documentary, go to
