LI Meetings News

MINUTES
September 22, 2001     San Jose, California
Submitted by Marlisa Fua, Secretary

General Meeting held at Nenito & Evan Yuag's residence in San Jose

Presided by: Leo Mamicpic, President

  1. Turnover of duties and files particularly for the Secretary and Treasurer positions. Marlisa Fua, our newly elected Secretary will contact Bebe Alberta Camilo in Costa Mesa to facilitate the secretary position turnover. Wennilyn Fua, our newly elected Treasurer, will work with Evan Tan-Yuag on the treasurer position turnover. New signature cards will be filled out for our bank account. Also, our contact address will be changed to that of our newly elected secretary. Evan also gave us a quick summary of our finances.

  2. After some discussion, it was agreed upon that the induction of officers will be informally conducted during the LI 2002 Fiesta Camping event.

  3. For our Fiesta 2002, we are still looking at the campground near Santa Barbara (most probably El Capitan). Both Dan and Leo will be reminding each other to make sure the campsite reservations will be called on Nov. 1, 2001, the first day they will start taking bookings. We intend to reserve a section of the campground to accommodate all of us so that we won't be scattered about like before.

  4. It was agreed upon that a yearly membership fee of $5.00 will be collected from our members starting with the year 2002. The nominal fee is due in January of each year with a deadline on the May fiesta celebration. This will help LI maintain a 'running balance' for all our activities and projects. The fees will be collected by designated members by areas, namely:
    Bay Area                         Zenaida Maghanoy
    Salinas                             Lope & Nida Baguio
    Sacramento area            Wennilyn Fua
    Los Angeles                     Betty Baroro
    New York/Chicago         Edward Lim

Dues may also be mailed directly to our treasurer at the following address:
    WENNILYN FUA
    8585 PETUNIA WAY
    ELK GROVE     CA    95624

  5. PROJECTS
+Tents for Lazi Girl Scouts - Like our past donations to the Lazi Boy Scouts, it was agreed upon to donate 7 tents (for ~ 6-8 girls per tent) and canopies for shade. The budget approved for these items is $1,000.00 to include shipping/handling costs. (
Update: The day after the meeting, 7 tents and 3 canopies were purchased kay ga-sale sa Sears... 13x8 tent @ $59.99 and the 12x12 canopy @ $19.99 for a total of $518.29 incl. tax)

+Dictionary was brought up by Naida as lacking in our schools. She reported that in her last visit, some teachers/principals personally asked to donate this needed reference book. A lively discussion followed. It was decided that we solicit our members to donate a dictionary and choose which school to give it to. Since in our by-laws, we state our desire to help not just Lazi but other towns as well, we agreed to have the donors choose one central elementary school from each town. Dan and Marlisa chose Talingting, Nida and Lope chose Cang-alwang, Al and Luz chose Siquijor, Daday and Mike chose Maria, Pimpim and Bingbing chose Larena, Bebe Nenito and Evan chose Larena-Tapon, Leo chose San Juan and Naida, who already gave to Lazi Central Elementary school, chose the elementary school of Campalanas. If possible, the donors will find an 'encyclopedic' dictionary to have more illustrations and photos.

The tents, canopies and dictionaries will be packed in 2 boxes and shipped via LBC to
Ester Alaya-ay (Naida's sister) in Lazi for safe-keeping. Leo who will be in the Philippines this coming December, will be on hand to do the distributions himself.

    Leo will contact
Edward Lim to ask for, if any, letters of acknowledgment for the tents and sports equipment that were sent to the Lazi Boy Scouts and school children. If no letters of acknowledgment were received, Leo will then follow it up during his visit.

+Youth Involvement - We need to educate and involve our youth in our activities and projects. Education would include the following:
            * about Lazi International and our activities
            * Lazi and Siquijor Island background/history
            *our culture and traditions
We are looking to reserve 2 hours during our camping for youth participation/discussions. There may be a presentation of some kind related to the above topics. Coordinators for this project are Welyn (Stockton), Bingbing (San Jose) and Virgie (Elk Grove).

  6. Future Projects - We will discuss at our 2002 Fiesta Camping the possibility of linking up with various USA-based Siquijorian organizations to work together on special projects that will directly/indirectly help uplift the lives of our fellow Siquijorians back home. So keep your thinking caps on.

Our meeting ended around 4:00PM. This was immediately followed by a birthday celebration for Jason Yuag.... so continuous gihapon ang kaon.... hangtud alas dies sa gabi-i.
